Council of the Americas

(COA) is the premier international business organization whose members share a common commitment  to economic and social development, open markets, the rule of law, and democracy throughout the Western Hemisphere. The Council's membership consists of leading international companies representing a broad spectrum of sectors, including banking and finance, consulting services, consumer products, energy and mining, manufacturing, media, technology, and transportation.

In 1965, David Rockefeller and a group of like-minded business people founded the Council of the Americas based on the fundamental belief that free markets and private enterprise offer the most effective means to achieve regional economic growth and prosperity. Since that time, membership has grown to over 200 blue chip companies that represent the majority to the U.S. private investment in Latin America.

Member firms include manufacturing, natural resources, technology, communications, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, banking and financial services. The Council’s broad-based membership provides it with a well respected, authoritative voice on public policy issues affecting the Americas.

The Council of the Americas is a business organization whose members share a common commitment to free trade and open markets throughout the Americas. Our programming and advocacy aim to inform, encourage, and promote free and integrated markets for the benefit of the companies that comprise our membership, as well as of the United States and all the people of the Americas.

The Council supports these policies in the belief that they provide an effective means of achieving the economic growth and prosperity on which the business interests of its members depend.

Pamela Wallin
Senior Advisor, Canadian Affairs

To speak with this expert, call 212-277-8384 or emailcommunications@as-coa.org.

The career of the Canadian-born journalist, diplomat and entrepreneur has spanned more than thirty years and several continents.
It began in 1973, when, with an Honors degree in psychology and political science, she went where few women had gone before – to a maximum security penitentiary as a social worker. But the next year, an offer to host an "open-line" radio program for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation launched what would prove to be, a distinguished multimedia career. Pamela worked both on-air and as a producer for CBC radio in Regina, in Ottawa and in the country’s media and business capital, Toronto.
By 1979, Pamela’s interest in federal politics inspired a move back to the nation’s capital where she took on the challenge of political reporting for the country’s largest newspaper, the Toronto Star. Then, in 1981, she was hired by CTV, the country’s largest network, to become the co-host of the premier national television morning show, Canada AM. She not only anchored the program but also traveled the country and the world, covering everything from economic summits to wars. In the course of her career, Pamela has interviewed every Canadian prime minister and literally thousands of politicians, CEOs, thinkers and cultural icons. Ms. Wallin also produced and hosted CTV's weekly Sunday morning political forum Question Period, and she regularly anchored the weekend edition of the CTV National News, the country’s highest-rated news program. In 1992, CBC recruited her – and in the process made her the first Canadian woman to co-anchor the nightly national television newscast Prime Time News.

The co-anchor position was one of many professional “firsts.” She was, for example, the first woman in Canadian network television history to be appointed Parliamentary bureau chief. And, she was the first woman to be named to the powerful diplomatic post in New York City.
In 1995, Wallin founded an independent television company, Pamela Wallin Productions Inc., through which she hosted and produced a live nightly interview program and was also on the leading edge of creating content for the Internet, with business partners including the Chapters book chain and the Globe and MailCanada’s s leading newspaper. Wallin also hosted the Canadian edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, garnering the highest ratings for a network production to date.
As a respected broadcaster and journalist, Pamela covered all aspects of domestic and international politics but she dedicated much of her professional career to coverage of the Canada/U.S. relationship. In November 2001, she traveled to New York to host the highly successful “Canada Loves New York” rally, where more than 23,000 Canadians gathered to show support for the American people following the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Pamela had been running her own highly successful, independent television production company for seven years when she received a call to serve her country. On June 25, 2002, Prime Minister Jean Chretien appointed Wallin to the prestigious post of Canada's Consul General to New York City.
As “Ambassador to Wall Street,” Pamela managed one of Canada’s largest diplomatic missions, and was charged with overseeing the financial and security aspects of the world’s largest trading relationship. She now serves as the Senior Advisor on Canadian Affairs at the Americas Society and the Council of the Americas. She also serves on several corporate boards, including Gluskin Sheff & Associates and Bell Globemedia.
A highly sought-after public speaker, Pamela has given many academic lectures and public presentations in both Canada and the United States, including delivering a keynote speech at NORAD headquarters. She is the author of three books, including her best selling autobiography Since You Asked (1998) and Speaking of Success (2001).
Wallin serves on the boards of numerous professional and charitable organizations, and has been widely recognized for her professional and community work. In 2002, she was named to the Canadian Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In 2003, she was named a Distinguished Honoree by the Canadian Society of New York and, in 2004, Wallin received a national Visionary Award from the Office for Partnerships for Advanced Skills and was once again recognized by Queen Elizabeth II for her public service and achievements.
Wallin has thirteen Honorary Doctorates. But it was in 1994 that Ms. Wallin received the most precious recognition of her career, when she was honored by the residents of her hometown of WadenaSaskatchewan, who renamed a main street “Pamela Wallin Drive.”
